JUDY MCDONALD

Biography      Work Samples      Hallmark

Judy McDonald has always been a doll maker and an artist, painting portraits and landscapes in colored pencil and watercolor for more than 30 years while also creating dolls. She draws inspiration for the latter from cloth dolls made in early America.

McDonald’s interpretations are all one-of-a-kind, sewn in cloth with their faces painted in acrylics. She adds facial details with a fine-point pen and oil-based colored pencils before antiquing and sealing them.

She signs each of her dolls and names them for her ancestors, choosing the names from a genealogy book published in 1675. A child (or adult) can tuck one of McDonald’s small dolls in a pocket or purse and take it along with her as a best friend on a great adventure.

McDonald exhibits her dolls and her paintings in galleries and museum shows. She has given demonstrations, lectures, and doll-making classes for many years. She strives to inspire others to appreciate American art and history through her dolls.
