For period crafters, a clock represents the cabinet-maker's rather than mechanic's art. They encase modern movements with fine woodworking. They are often tallcase clocks (often termed 'grandfather' clocks after the popular 19th Century song), floor-standing, pendulum-regulated cabinets of highly figured or carved wood often standing in excess of seven feet tall. Some makers also make shelf clocks and we occasionally see wall clocks. Thanks to their modern movements, all keep reasonably good time (not 'atomic' accuracy) and serve as the centerpiece to a room, much as did the originals.
