A Closer Look at Early American Spectacles

Photo by Winfield RossAn important resource for researchers and collectors, the web site www.antiquespectacles.com publishes essays on the development of eyeglasses, photos of antique examples, and links to collecting groups and their publications.

For more information about the Ocular Heritage Society, contact John W. Tull, MD, Corresponding Secretary and Treasurer, 143 Springdale Road, York, PA 17403 or valdatull@suscom.net. Society members meet in a different city each year to present lectures on optical history and visit collections here and abroad.

The classic reference in the field is Spectacles and Other Vision Aids: A History and Guide, by J. William Rosenthal, MD (Novato, California: Jeremy Norman & Co., 1994). Although expensive, the book  is available in bookstores (and can be purchased on-line from this website using the box at right).

Collectible Eyeglasses, by Frederique Crestin-Billet, originally published in French, now has an English edition (by Flammarion, 2004). Chapters on antique, modern, and sports models have colorful illustrations of various eyeglasses from the distant past to the ultra-modern present. This book is also available on-line by clicking the box at right.
