Early American Lore: A Dark and Stormy Night | The original painting of Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze's George Washington Crossing the Delaware was destroyed during World War II by British bombers. However, Leutze painted several copies of his masterpiece. One hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, a 1897 gift of John S. Kennedy. Another copy hangs in the west wing of the White House in Washington, D.C.
