Portrait of Matt Rushing

Matt Rushing owns and operates Pine Hill Primitives, a one-man shop building 18th- and 19th-Century furniture reproductions. Each and every piece is made with the joinery and methods those early craftsmen produced, from pegged mortise and tenons to hand-cut dovetails to the tapered locking joints of a Windsor chair. Each Windsor chair is made from splitting out the logs and steam-bending the pieces to using the same tools the early chairmakers use to carve out the seats. Every piece of cabinet work is hand planed and scraped to give the authentic look and feel of real period furniture. Matt is a self-taught craftsman and began building furniture in 2000. Through trial and error, he has learned the ways and techniques of how furniture was made more than 250 years ago. Matt also teaches Windsor chairmaking, one on one, in his shop in Springfield, Missouri. Quality craftsmanship is the main goal for Matt, and he provides plenty of it in his work.
