Suzette Krummel has been a needleworker for most of her life. She began her journey of hand sewing after ordering a crewel embroidery kit from a magazine at age 10. Being self-taught, she was able to pursue her interest in penny rugs in earnest after retiring from the nursing profession in 1999.
Krummel’s love of antiques and folk art inspires her designs. She makes her rugs entirely of wool, gathering vintage wool from local sources and looking for unique weaves and textures. When dyeing the wool with natural dyes she uses everything from marigolds to onion skins and pansies to pokeberries. She cuts each piece and fastens it using the blanket stitch in perle cotton. Her colors and designs make each rug one of a kind.
She exhibits and sells her work at folk life festivals and art fairs in Missouri and Illinois and enjoys educating adults and children about penny rugs. She is a member of the Great River Artisans in Quincy, Illinois. She teaches classes in the area and has a line of patterns and hand-dyed wool.
