Portrait of Tim Sanner

Tim Sanner first became interested in flintlock rifles in the early 1990s when a good friend gave him a small cow horn and suggested that he make himself a good priming horn. For the next couple of years he made horns as gifts and gave most of them away before studying with two nationally known horners to expand his skills.

Sanner makes powder horns in a small shop beside his home in the Laurel Highlands of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, where he lives with his wife, Diana, and next door to their adult children. He researches each horn through a small collection of books filled with pictures and descriptions of horns from the 18th and 19th Centuries, keeping them as historically accurate as possible. Following the traditional way of making horns, he does most of the work by hand, using files, rasps, and scrapers.

His powder horns, which he makes airtight, have been featured in Pennsylvania Magazine and are on display in Lord Nelson’s Gallery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
