Portrait of Joshua Klein

Joshua Klein is a furniture conservator and maker practicing in coastal Brooklin, Maine. Klein has had formal training in luthiery at the Musical String Instrument Repair Program in Red Wing, Minnesota, and in furniture restoration at the National Institute of Wood Finishing.

In 2010, Klein opened his own private practice restoring and conserving historic furniture. He has written for American Period Furniture and Popular Woodworking Magazine (August 2015) and regularly writes at his blog, The Workbench Diary. He is writing a book about the furniture making of Jonathan Fisher, a rural Maine polymath in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries.

Klein’s furniture making is motivated by historic research. By analyzing the construction and tool marks of the artifacts, he attempts to re-create not only the product but the process. By restricting himself exclusively to the tools and methods employed by artisans of the pre-industrial era, he believes the final product is the most authentic re-creation possible.
