Kandye Mahurin started her company, Sassafras Creek Originals, in 1994 from her desire to have antique game boards in her own home. Because of the difficulty in finding good quality boards at a reasonable price, she decided to try to make one for herself—and it turned out so well that her family and friends began asking for the boards for gifts.
In October 2003, The Best Of Missouri Hands accepted Mahurin as a juried artisan. In 2005, she was selected for Early American Life Magazine’s Directory of Traditional American Crafts. She has also had her work published in several magazines including Early American Life, House & Garden, Town & Country, and St. Louis Homes.
Each piece of art Mahurin paints is a marriage of American folk art design and history and is totally crafted by hand. No two pieces will ever be alike. Each shows Mahurin’s love ofAmerican history, especially the colonial period through the Civil War era. The designs on her game boards and furniture are taken from symbols, folk art and quilts of that era. She is particularly fond of the designs used by Pennsylvania Dutch craftsmen and instills that look in her work. She also transfers those same designs and colors onto floor cloths, dower chests, and chalkware, enabling them to work well together in a room setting.
