Kathy J. (Lanciani) Gaul learned to sew as a child in her native Massachusetts before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in textiles and clothing from California Polytechnic State University in Pomona, California. She spent 10 years restoring antique quilts before launching her business, Meetinghouse Hill Designs.
At her Colorado-based company, Gaul designs, stitches, publishes, and markets a line of wool appliquée art patterns, now numbering more than 50. Her patterns, which often reflect a New England flavor, use the same felted wool fabric and embroidery stitches as those found in 19th-Century rugs. She focuses on stitching detail and dimensional manipulation of wool to create realism in her art. The company also produces a small line of rug-hooking canvases and punch-needle patterns from her designs.
Gaul participates in quilt shows and hook-ins across the country as both a vendor and a teacher. In 2016, Meetinghouse Hill Designs won the viewer’s choice award for best decorated booth at the Vermont Quilt Festival’s 40th anniversary. That same year she self-published Wool Appliquée Essentials—Tools and Techniques for Success as a handy resource for wool stitchers.
She has also written for various quilt and wool-related publications, and she has taught at shops and quilt guilds across the country. Gaul and husband Jerry, who runs the business end of Meetinghouse Hill Designs, live in Colorado Springs with their beloved Fluffernutter, a Maine-coon mix cat.
