Stephen Earp has pursued a career as a potter since receiving his bachelor of fine arts degree in ceramics from the University of Iowa in 1986. He served a traditional apprenticeship under Richard Bresnahan at St. John’s Pottery in Minnesota.

Earp’s career has taken him around the world. He established his first pottery in Fordingbridge, the New Forest, England. He also worked in Nicaragua as a ceramic technician for the craft support organization Potters for Peace and served as an archaeology assistant in the Ivory Coast, West Africa.

Earp has taught wheel throwing and glaze chemistry classes at various institutions throughout Massachusetts, and headed the pottery at Old Sturbridge Village for several years. In 2003 he opened Stephen Earp Redware in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. His work is also sold in various venues throughout the United States.

He has been listed in the Directory of Traditional American Crafts since 2007 and is among the Keepers of the Tradition archived by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. He publishes a syndicated bimonthly online journal on early pottery called This Day in Pottery History.
